Get Your Spot Prawn Fix Before It’s Too Late! Steveston’s Seafood Celebration is On Now!

If you’re looking for a delightful way to welcome summer, a trip to Steveston Village should be on your list before June 15. The annual Steveston Spot Prawn & Seafood Celebration is currently in full swing, and it’s a fantastic opportunity to enjoy some of the freshest seafood around. Since spot prawns are only in season for a short time, you’ll want to make the most of this coastal celebration.
Running until Sunday, June 15, the celebration in Steveston Village offers a taste of local coastal culture. You can head down to Fisherman’s Wharf daily to find fresh seafood brought in directly by local fishers. Beyond the fresh catch, there are also demonstrations from professional chefs, where you can pick up some tips for preparing delicious seafood dishes yourself.
A highlight of the celebration is Spot Prawn Day, happening this Saturday, June 7, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. This lively day takes over the area between Fisherman’s Wharf and The Gulf of Georgia Cannery with activities for everyone. You can watch local chefs on the Culinary Stage share their secrets for cooking seafood. The boardwalk will be filled with live music, including some local sea shanties, adding to the festive atmosphere.
For families, the Kids Zone is a great spot, where children can learn about Gyotaku, the traditional Japanese method of fish printing, and even try it out. There will also be face painting, an inflatable bouncy boat, and live performances to keep the younger crowd entertained. In celebration of Spot Prawn Day and World Oceans Day, the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site is hosting a Sustainability Expo from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Here, you can explore interactive booths focused on marine life, ocean conservation, and sustainable farming, and even participate in Gyotaku art workshops with artist Paula Nishikawara. Look out for performances by Circus West throughout the day too. Don’t forget to contribute to the community paint-by-numbers mural, grab a selfie with the Spot Prawn mural by local artist Laura Kwok, and visit the Tourism Richmond tent for games and summer inspiration.
Another delicious part of the celebration is the Richmond Spot Prawn and Seafood Dine About Promotion, which continues until Sunday, June 15. Participating restaurants across Richmond are collaborating with Steveston Fishers to offer special fresh-caught seafood dishes. It’s a wonderful chance to enjoy a variety of locally fished seafood while soaking up the summer vibes along the boardwalk with friends and family.
