New Balance Ellipse: Soft, Bouncy, and Surprisingly Fun on Easy Days

You’ve probably got a few pairs of running shoes already. Some feel great for a quick loop, others hold up for longer efforts, but you’re hunting for that one pair you can grab without thinking twice for most of your everyday runs. The New Balance Ellipse lands right in that sweet spot.

It weighs about 9.6 ounces in a men’s size 9.5. That’s light enough to forget you’re wearing extra cushioning, yet it still delivers a generous, soft ride. The heel-to-toe drop sits at 8 mm, with stack heights around 38 mm in the heel and 30 mm in the forefoot.

The midsole uses New Balance’s Fresh Foam X, a plush, squishy foam that absorbs impact well while staying light. On easy runs it feels soft underfoot, saving your legs after a tough week. It has a gentle bounce too, so the miles roll by without that slogging sensation some softer shoes develop.

It won’t replace a snappier shoe if you like to pick up the tempo, but for the bulk of your weekly runs it keeps things comfortable and fun.

You slip them on and they just feel right. The upper uses layered engineered mesh: breathable where you need air, structured where you need support. It hugs your foot without pinching or creating hot spots.

A gusseted tongue stays in place (no more fiddling mid-run), and the laces stretch a little for a secure fit. The collar and heel counter offer enough padding to feel protective but not bulky.

New Balance kept things simple. Rubber covers the high-wear areas while trimming weight everywhere else. You get reliable traction on roads without dragging extra ounces, and the outsole should hold up fine for the kind of regular mileage most of us put in.

If your typical week includes easy runs, recovery miles, and the occasional long effort, the Ellipse makes a strong daily trainer. It shines when you want plush comfort that doesn’t weigh you down or complicate things.

Runners chasing speed workouts or race-day PRs will probably reach for something firmer and more responsive. But for the majority of runs that make up real training, this shoe earns its spot in the rotation.
