Most people think of Miami as a winter getaway to escape the cold. But if you visit in August, you’ll catch a side of the city that winter tourists miss entirely.

Miami’s summer season runs through late September, bringing a diverse mix of neighbourhood cultural events, international art, and outdoor adventures. Spend your morning snorkelling in Biscayne National Park or exploring the Everglades, then head to Little Havana for afternoon music and Cuban coffee. In the evening, catch world-class dancers at the International Ballet Festival of Miami, which goes until August 16.

Art lovers can head to Mana Wynwood for Pop Air, an interactive exhibition filled with giant inflatable installations. Ocean Drive Arts offers free wellness classes and community performances right by the water, while The Bass Museum hosts cultural events throughout August.

If you’re travelling with family before the school year starts, the city has plenty of options. Zoo Miami features giant animatronic insects at Bugtopia, while Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden hides six towering stone trolls across its grounds.

For an air-conditioned break, indoor spots like the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science and the Miami Children’s Museum offer hands-on activities.

August also marks Black Business Month, giving you a great reason to experience Miami’s rich Black and Caribbean heritage. Support local Black-owned restaurants, shops, and cultural institutions in historic neighbourhoods like Overtown.

You can also spend a quiet afternoon wandering the waterfront in Coconut Grove, admiring public art in the Miami Design District, or checking out Wynwood’s murals. Sports fans can catch a Miami Marlins home game or watch Inter Miami CF play.

If you want a trip centred on culture and neighbourhood discovery, late summer is an ideal time to go. Pick two or three activities from this list, map out your weekend, and start planning.
