British Columbian designed the Royal Canadian Mint’s brand new glow-in-the-dark $2 coin celebrating Canada 150

Did you know a British Columbian artwork is on the brand new glow-in-the-dark $2 coin? The Royal Canadian Mint currently hosted the 2017 My Canada, My Inspiration (MCMI) contest where Canadians submitted new Canada 150 coin designs. After narrowing down thousands of entries from every province and territory, 25 finalists were selected and more than one million people cast their vote. Richmond native Dr. Timonthy Hsia illustration was among the five winners and chosen to be featured on the world’s first glow in the dark circulation coin.

Dr. Hsia’s coin design, Dance of the Spirits, was inspired by the “Cree people attribute the northern lights to the special moment when the spirits manifest themselves, dancing, to the human eyes and minds below. The northern lights are a true Canadian wonder, one that all Canadians from sea to sea can appreciate and call their own. To me, this radiant light display embodies Canada’s unity and beauty.”

The new 2017 coins including a coloured version of the 25¢ and the glow-in-the-dark $2 are now in circulation. Check your pocket change if you have the new coins.

Vancouverites will have an opportunity to exchange their old $2 coin for the brand new special toonie at a free coin exchange event on July 6 and 7.
