AetherHaus: A New Kind of Ice Bath and Sauna Experience in Vancouver’s West End

A new kind of space has opened its doors right across from Vancouver’s iconic English Bay Beach. This spot, called AetherHaus, is all about creating an immersive wellness experience that feels rooted in simple hospitality, not pressure or pretension. It’s a place where you can step away from the stress that often comes with modern wellness culture and simply show up as you are.
AetherHaus draws inspiration from deep-rooted, ancient traditions. Think of the German Aufguss, a ritual where aromatic steam is circulated through the sauna, and the Russian Banya, known as a communal bathhouse for its heat, steam, and social connection. The studio embraces a warm, welcoming approach at its very core.
The name itself, AetherHaus, reflects this spirit. Aether is drawn from Greek mythology, where it was believed to be the pure essence the gods breathed; the fifth element beyond earth, water, air, and fire. Haus is the German word for ‘house,’ evoking a sense of comfort, belonging, and shared experience. Together, it represents a home for the elements and for presence.
The Founder, Kevin Frank, explains that they created AetherHaus to welcome everyone, not just those who are hyper focused on health metrics. This intentional approach is a counterpoint to the superficiality that can exist in other wellness circles. It’s a space designed for anyone seeking stillness, connection, and a deeper relationship with themselves and their community.
Stepping inside, you find an expansive Himalayan salt sauna with radiant heat and communal cold pools sheltered by dimly-lit rock walls. There’s also an atmospheric lounge with herbal teas perfect for quiet conversation. In a nod to the diversity of the West End, the environment is inclusive and welcoming to all.
A key part of the experience is that every element is intentionally curated to inspire reflection and comfort. To keep you fully present, cell phones are not permitted, encouraging you to fully immerse yourself in the moment. Program Director Dave Gu notes that the goal isn’t to push or perform; it’s to allow space for you to be with yourself in a state of calm, clarity, or whatever you need in that moment.
The experiences are structured in a 90-minute format, allowing you to move intuitively while still enjoying moments of intentional guidance. You have a few options for how you want to experience the space:
Open Haus (Free Flow): These are self-guided, ambient, and social sessions. You move freely between the Himalayan salt sauna, group cold plunge pools, and tea lounge. An AetherHaus Guide is present to tend the stove, circulating the heat and scent of infused water with whole organic flowers or trees.
AetherHaus Sessions (Semi-Guided): These sessions offer a guided practice combined with free-flow time. They are designed to support you in finding stillness and connecting with others. Sessions include:
Haus Classic: An Aufguss-inspired ritual using darkness, curated playlists, and high heat for deep introspection.
Sound Journey: A live musical immersion that uses singing bowls, flutes, and other instruments to promote deep relaxation.
The Cold Enthusiast: Provides practical tools and expert guidance to deepen your cold exposure practice.
For many, the cold bath is a central component. AetherHaus is the first studio in Vancouver to offer communal cold plunge pools, accommodating group plunges with a range of temperatures for all levels. Safety is a top priority, as it is the first facility purpose-built to be in full compliance with City and Coastal Health regulations, setting a high standard for hygiene and operational integrity.
The guidance is informed and supportive. Program Director Dave Gu and Jon West are both certified in the renowned breathing and cold exposure practice developed by Wim Hof, often referred to as ‘The Iceman.’ They’ve trained the team to provide confident support for anyone exploring cold exposure, whether you’re new to the practice or a seasoned plunger.
General Manager Mika McCann sums up the spirit perfectly: The invitation is for each guest to choose their own experience and explore at their own pace. AetherHaus honours tradition while focusing on presence, creating a space where you can simply connect with yourself and your community.
