Contest! Chinese New Year 2017: Celebrate the Year of the Rooster

Happy Chinese Year! On January 28th, it’s the Year of the Rooster. The Rooster is the tenth zodiac sign. They are seen as confident, honest and hardworking. They also enjoy being around people but can be seen as attention seekers.

The 2 weeks celebration can be stressful hosting dinner parties with your family and friends. However, Real Canadian Superstore and No Frills is your one stop shop for all of your Chinese New Year essentials from ingredients to décor at low prices.

On Chinese New Year, I always craved home cooked, comfort food. I’ve prepared 4 dishes for good luck & prosperity. All of the ingredients and seasonings are from Real Canadian Superstore.

Since its Year of the Rooster, the first dish is Hainanese Chicken Rice. It’s poached chicken with chile sauce. It’s one of my favourite comfort food. For the rice, I used Rooster Brand Jasmine Rice. It has a wonderful, sweet aroma that goes well with many Chinese dishes. Plus, it’s one of the best selling rice in Canada.

On the side, I used the chicken stock from the Hainanese Chicken to make the egg drop soup with fresh bok choy.

It can’t be Chinese New Year without fresh seafood. Seafood symbolized wealth and prosperity. The third dish is Scallion Ginger Shrimp. It’s stir fry shrimp with ginger and scallion sauce.

The last dish is Steamed Fresh Tilapia. The Chinese word for fish, ‘Yu,’ sounds like the word for abundance. It represent a good beginning and a good end for the coming year.

For the sauce, it’s ginger, scallion, cilantro and Rooster Brand Light Soy Sauce.
