White Rock To Host Stand Up Paddle Surfing Race
One of the coast’s hottest water fitness trends will be on tap Sunday, August 3rd in White Rock at the 3rd Annual Sundog Semiahmoo SUP Classic, which is expected to be Canada’s largest Stand Up Paddle race.
Stand Up Paddle Surfing (SUP) is like surfing meets kayaking and its popularity as a water sport has been growing steadily. Scott Robertson, coach and SUP Classic event sponsor says, “SUP is the fastest growing recreational sport in the world right now because you can do it absolutely anywhere there is water and it’s easy to learn. You can do it with your friends, your kids, your parents, or your dog!” Scott also says, SUP can be a competitive sport, an extreme sport, a work out, or just another way to relax and enjoy the beach and the water.
The August 3rd Sundog Semiahmoo SUP Classic will have three separate races, catering to all skill levels and is open to anyone who has a paddleboard. There will be 10km race, a 5 km race and a kid’s race. “The short course will be fun for beginners to experts”, says Robertson. “The 10K race is a little more challenging and some of the top athletes from BC, Alberta, Oregon and Washington State will be racing”. Of note, four-time Olympic athlete, Simon Whitfield, as well as professional stand up paddleboarder Norm Hann (star of “Stand Film” and “Stand Up For Great Bear”, two award-winning SUP movies) will be racing in this year’s event. All of the races can be viewed in their entirety from the beach or the pier where friends and family can cheer on participants.
There will also be an Expo at the race with exhibitors featuring SUP boards and accessories, fitness and nutrition products, clothing, lifestyle products and more. The Sundog Semiahmoo SUP Classic is part of the 65th White Rock Sea Festival and along with the SUP race and expo there will be live music, vendors, entertainers and a night parade.
