Vancouver TheatreSports League Goes Gorilla
Vancouver TheatreSports™ League (VTSL) pays tribute to Keith Johnstone, an internationally recognized improv authority, with three Johnstone-created formats featured in VTSL’s spring programming line-up, including the popular TheatreSports™, Maestro Impro© on VTSL’s Rookie Night (Sunday), and starting April 17, Gorilla Theatre™.
“Keith Johnstone’s contributions to the improv community have been huge,†says VTSL Executive Director Jay Ono, “We’re big fans of his here at VTSL and are proud to showcase three of his innovative formats in our current programming.â€
Gorilla Theatre™ features five improvisers who will take turns directing the other performers in various scenes. At the start of each show, a host will introduce the improvisers, along with a performer dressed as a gorilla. Audience feedback will play a big role in Gorilla Theatre™, with the host instructing the audience to yell, “Banana!†if they enjoyed the scene direction, or “Forfeit!†if they were unimpressed.
Audience-approved directors will be rewarded with a banana, while directors who are given forfeits will receive a punishment, which could include a range of fun tasks, from reciting poetry to giving audience members foot massages. The director with the most bananas at the end of the night will be named the winner. Each 75-minute Gorilla Theatreâ„¢ show will be filled with mischief and misbehaving as the directors battle it out for bananas and the favour of the audience.
