On the night of September 15th, 1810, Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang the church bells in Dolores to address the people of the town. In what is known as “El Grito de Dolores”, he called on the Mexican people to fight for their independence from Spain. This event ignited the War of Independence across the country, which would lead to Mexico’s independence in 1821. This date marks the beginning of modern Mexico.
September 16th – The Day of Independence – is our country’s most important national holiday, involving civic, cultural and military ceremonies and celebrations. Every year on September 15th, the “Grito de Independencia” is recreated by Mexican government officials troughout Mexico and in Mexican diplomatic representations around the globe.
