RBC Sports Day

On your marks, get set, it’s that time of year again! The sixth annual RBC Sports Day in Canada, a national celebration of sport with 2,000 local events—offering everything from meet and greets with Olympians and Paralympians to try-it activities— takes place on Saturday, November 21, 2015.

In honour of its sixth year and to celebrate the Year of Sport, ParticipACTION and True Sport released the Top 15 Moments in Canadian Sport for 2015. The list captures moments that exemplify the role sport plays in defining our Canadian identity and remind us that buzzworthy, remarkable, uplifting moments happen at every level of sport. Included on the list is four-year-old British Columbian Addison McArthur’s “most inspiring” gold-medal race at the World Transplant Games, as well as the “most heartbreaking moment which went to the Canadian Women who were eliminated from Women’s World Cup in June at BC Place.

RBC Sports Day in Canada offers a great opportunity for Canadians to try something new and experience their own special moments in sport. Below are some great RBC Sports Day in Canada events and inspiring sport stories in B.C. – find more near you and across the country at sportsday.cbc.ca.

· BC Wheelchair Sports Association will host a series of wheelchair sporting events for individuals with disabilities in Richmond and Vancouver from November 17 to 22. Titled, “Wheelchair Sports Week in BC,” guests are invited to participate in various wheelchair activities. These events will lead up to a large multi-sport Have a Go event on November 22 that will feature wheelchair basketball, rugby and athletics at the Richmond Olympic Oval from 1 to 3 p.m. Special guests include, Ken Hall, former national para-throws coach, as well as national and provincial 2015 IPC track and field and Para Pan Am athletes.

o November 17 – Wheelchair rugby at the Ray-Cam Centre in Vancouver from 6 to 8 p.m.

o November 19 – Wheelchair athletics at the Richmond Olympic Oval from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

o November 21 – Wheelchair racing roller session at the BCWSA Office in Vancouver from 1 to 3 p.m.

o November 21 – Wheelchair rugby scrimmage at the Richmond Olympic Oval between 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

· Campbell River Sports Week (Nov 15 – 21) – Campbell River Community Centre; Sportsplex; Strathcona Gardens

o The City of Campbell River and Strathcona Regional District and are working with a number of community sports, recreation and active living groups to promote National Sports Week. This week will include a variety of FREE SPORTS & ACTIVE RECREATION ACTIVITIES of throughout the community.

· Duncan RBC Sports Day in Canada (Nov 20 – 22)

o ISC-Duncan Sat. Nov 21 – 1 pm – 2:50 pm RBC Sports Day Skate; ISC-Duncan Sat. Nov 21 – 1 pm – 2:50 pm Multi-Sports; Kerry Park – Shawnigan Lake Sunday, Nov 15 1:00 pm – 2:15 pm; National Jersey Day Skate Cowichan Lake Friday, Nov 20 11am – 12:50pm

· North Saanich National Sports Day at Panorama Recreation Centre (Nov. 21)

o Panorama Recreation will offer a variety of different sports that families can try out at no cost at two locations: Panorama Recreation Centre and Greenglade Community Centre. There will be a FREE swim from 1:30-3:30pm, a FREE skate from 1pm-2:20pm, free drop it sports time for pickleball, sportball, floor hockey, skating, swimming, water polo, kayaking, underwater hockey, and a free spin class for anyone who would like to try spin. As well, there will be local sports team representatives and associations at both locations.

· Langley TRY IT EVENT (Nov. 21) – Langley Events Centre

o Will offer a variety of ice and off ice sports kids and families to try. Find a new sport to get and stay active. Free fun for the whole family. First 50 families get a free hot chocolate.
