Contest! International Music Superstar Mariza Performs at Chan Centre – October 27, 2013
The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at the University of British Columbia (UBC) announces the return of Portuguese-Mozambican artist and the living voice of fado, Mariza, on Sunday, October 27, 2013 at 7pm in the Chan Shun Concert Hall. Fado is a traditional musical genre from Portugal that is characterized by soulful songs of yearning featuring poignant lyrics. This concert, part of a five-continent world tour that began in spring 2013, marks Mariza’s first time in Vancouver since her sold-out performance in 2009 at the Chan Centre.
“Mariza’s performances are some of the most powerful and expressive concerts that I have ever programmed,†said Joyce Hinton, Co-Managing Director of the Chan Centre. “Her ability to connect on a profoundly emotional level with audiences has helped her build a phenomenal following all over the world. We are so pleased to be able to welcome Mariza back to Vancouver.â€
Mariza grew up listening to and singing the yearning, keening sounds of fado music in the streets and tavernas of her native Lisbon. With an incredibly strong musical background in gospel, soul, and jazz, it was Mariza’s father who encouraged her to emphasize the traditional music of Portugal in her repertoire. In 1999, following the death of fado’s most beloved interpreter, Amalia Rodrigues, Mariza performed a broadcast tribute that soon led to the release of her first fado album in 2001, the acclaimed, Fado em Mim.
Through impassioned concerts and additional recordings, including two Latin GRAMMY nominations for Concerto em Lisboa in 2007 and Terra in 2008, Mariza continues to draw attention to this cherished musical genre making it an internationally recognized art form.
The roots of fado music can be traced back to the port districts of Lisbon from as early as the 1820s. The sounds of fado are intimately connected to the Portuguese word saudade for which there is no English equivalent. Saudade symbolizes the melancholy associated with loss or longing, as well as the lifelong implications and complications of those losses. The music translates this mood into an earthy, powerful sound that is intensely moving in its sorrowful nature.
Mariza’s live performances weave her vibrant, soulful voice and graceful, commanding presence into a singular, unforgettable experience. Her world tour will give striking, dramatic voice to some of her greatest hits and favourite songs from throughout her illustrious career. She will be joined on stage by a number of exceptional instrumentalists, including two guitarras (10 or 12 string guitars), as well as
bass and drums.
Dr. Anthony Shelton, Director of the Museum of Anthropology at UBC, will give an exclusive talk for ticketholders prior to the concert. This special pre-concert conversation, which explores the unique image of Portugese arts and culture, will take place at 6:15pm in the Royal Bank Cinema at the Chan Centre.
