Carnaval del Sol on Granville Street – June 30, 2012 from 10:00 am – 10:00 pm
The fourth annual Carnaval del Sol, the city’s premiere summer event, will be hosted on five blocks of Granville Street in downtown Vancouver on June 30th, during Canada Day weekend, from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. More than 50,000 people attended last year’s festival, garnering LatinCouver a national award for promoting Latin culture in Canada.
BC Place will come alive with the colours of LatinCouver in lights during this event, igniting a Latin spirit in the Vancouver skyline.
“Carnaval del Sol is now one of Vancouver’s largest and most exciting summer events, bringing a dynamic celebration of Latin culture in Canada to the heart of our downtown,” says Mayor Gregor Robertson.
In expectation of drawing another 50,000 people this year, the event will showcase:
- Performances by local Latin artists on Granville Street. Musical performers will include the Boom Booms, classical pianist Linda Lee Thomas, Will Campa from Cuba, dance group Mexico Vivo, Mariachi del Sol, Sumba Fusion, Brejera Band, and La Joropera from Venezuela, among others.
- An authentic Latin American food market with the best of Latin American cuisine that will be reviewed by food bloggers.
- A Latin American Marketplace with games and activities for children.
- Zumba street dancing.
- A tourism section where attendees can learn about travel to Latin America.
Carnaval del Sol 2012 is a green event and a strong supporter of the city’s effort toward becoming the world’s greenest city by 2020.
