BC's Brightest Minds Takes Place Tomorrow - April 30, 2013

Tomorrow, Tuesday April 30th, BC’s Brightest Minds at Playland will bring together 23 two-person teams of students from across BC in a critical thinking science competition that uses Playland at the PNE as a real-life case study. BC’s Brightest Minds is held in conjunction with the 26th anniversary of Playland’s Science and Physics Day, a program that was created by a Lower Mainland school teacher and has since been mimicked around the world.

During the half-day BC’s Brightest Minds competition, each team will be given a set of physics problems, the necessary tools to complete those problems and access to the Playland Amusement Park. Up for grabs is a total of $2,000 in scholarships and official recognition for all award recipients: the winning team will take home $1,200 ($600 each), while the second place team will earn $600 ($300 each) and third place will take home $200 ($100 each).

Playland once again joins the University of British Columbia in support of the annual competition by welcoming a team of expert educators from the UBC Physics department to help develop and oversee the contest. Along with formulating the questions and monitoring the competition, these esteemed physicists are also responsible for marking the competitors’ answers and determining this year’s lucky winners.
