When you think of San Francisco, you probably picture cable cars, steep streets, and sourdough. But the city just turned itself into one of the best outdoor destinations in the country. If you want fresh ocean air and dramatic views without leaving city limits, save this route for your next visit.

The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy recently launched a new trail: the Golden Gate Dozen. This 13-mile route connects 12 national park sites right inside city limits, running from Crissy Field down to Fort Funston.

Many visitors don’t realize San Francisco sits directly inside the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. You don’t need to drive hours out of town to find scenic trails and ocean bluffs. Hop on public transit, grab a coffee, and start walking. It makes nature surprisingly easy to reach during a city trip.

The full hike takes four to five hours with an 850-foot elevation gain. You can also ride a bike along the path or break the route into shorter sections.

Along the path, you’ll pass through 14 acres of open parkland at Presidio Tunnel Tops, where food trucks serve lunch across from Golden Gate Bridge views. The trail leads past the historic brick walls at Fort Point and down the sand ladder at Baker Beach. Further west, you’ll walk the rugged cliffs at Lands End before exploring the saltwater ruins at Sutro Baths.

Grab a Crissy Mocha at the Warming Hut or pause at Ocean Beach to watch seabirds. Once you reach the finish line at Fort Funston, you can rest while watching hang gliders catch the wind over the bluffs.

You can find the full route on AllTrails to plan stops and check trail maps. It’s an easy way to experience San Francisco beyond the usual tourist spots. Pack a light jacket, lace up your walking shoes, and hit the coast on foot.
