Vancouver Mayor’s Task Force on Housing Affordability - Vancouver Real Estate News March 2012

At the start of his second term in December 2011, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson announced he would establish a Mayor’s Task Force on Housing Affordability to provide advice to Council on ways to create low-income affordable rental and market housing.

The Real Estate Board volunteered our assistance in a letter to the Mayor’s office, explaining how Board members have significant expertise when it comes to affordability problems and extensive knowledge about what buyers and renters see as solutions to the affordability crunch.

We also explained that the Board has unique statistical data and is the only organization in Vancouver producing comprehensive monthly, quarterly and annual residential sales and price statistics by neighbourhood, which we have back to the 1950s.

In mid-December, Mayor Robertson announced that he would co-chair the task force panel with Olga Ilich, a developer, and former BC cabinet minister and Richmond Centre MLA.

In February, Mayor Robertson announced his selection of task force members. They represent an excellent range of organizations and individuals dedicated to finding workable solutions. The task force members are:

  • Alan Boniface, Principal, DIALOG & Urban Land Institute BC Chair.
  • Nathan Edelson, Senior Partner, 42 Street Consulting.
  • Leonard George, Director, Economic Development, Tsleil-Waututh Nation.
  • Marg Gordon, CEO, BC Apartment Owners & Managers Association.
  • Mark Guslits, Architect, Principal, Mark Guslits & Associates Inc.
  • Colleen Hardwick, Founder and CEO, New City Ventures.
  • Howard Johnson, CEO, Baptist Housing.
  • Kenneth Kwan, Chair, Building Committee, SUCCESS.
  • Michael Lewis, Executive Director, Canadian Centre for Community Renewal.
  • Eric Martin, VP, Bosa Development Corp.
  • Karen O’Shannacery, Executive Director, Lookout Society.
  • Al Poettcker, President & CEO, UBC Properties Trust.
  • Peter Simpson, President & CEO, Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association.
  • Bradford Tone, Architect, President, Tone Management

In choosing his team, Mayor Robertson’s goal was to have representation from as wide a range as possible of the many stakeholders in Vancouver’s housing industry which include finance, real estate, market development, architecture and design, academia, federal and provincial policy, non-market housing development and land use planning.

A separate working group chaired by architect, planner and SFU adjunct professor Michael Geller, will look at how the form and design of new housing affects affordability.
