B.C. presents plan to winter-proof Port Mann Bridge

Engineers have come up with some ideas to stop ice from building up on the cables of the Port Mann Bridge.

The plan is prevent a repeat of what happened during a storm last month when chunks of ice fell from the cables onto vehicles below and forced the closure of the span between Surrey and Coquitlam for several hours.

Transportation Minister Mary Polak says special sweepers have been designed that can be attached to the cables and moved up and down to remove snow and ice.

Water repellent coatings and de-icing solutions could also be applied to the cables to stop snow and ice from building up.
